About us

Bioinfo4Women

Is an initiative from the Life Sciences Department at the BSC to promote the research done by women in computational biology, with special focus on their transition from postdoc to junior independent positions. B4W supports researchers in computational biology by promoting the exchange of knowledge and experience of outstanding women researchers through activities such as seminars, conferences, training opportunities, and mentorships. B4W seeks to give greater visibility to the contribution of women in different fields of biology, with a particular focus on the areas of personalized medicine, bioinformatics and HPC. Ultimately, B4W aims at building a more collaborative, supportive, and equal scientific community that benefits society as a whole.

The programme

The Bioinfo4Women (B4W) Programme is a non-profit initiative from the Life Sciences Department at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) which started its activities in 2018. B4W receives institutional support from the Life Sciences Department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and contributes to fulfilling the BSC objective of promoting scientific career development in accordance with the center’s gender equality plan.

Objectives

a. Support women bioinformaticians and computational biologists in their transition from senior postdocs to independent junior PIs

b. Promote the recognition of the scientific achievements of women bioinformaticians and computational biologists

c. Increase the participation of women in bioinformatics research and leadership by promoting the exchange of knowledge and experience of outstanding women researchers through activities such as seminars, conferences, training opportunities, and mentorships, and facilitating collaborations with established research groups

d. Raise awareness and promote research on sex and gender bias analysis in computational biology and AI research for personalized medicine applications and scientific practice

e. Foster collaboration and communication among women scientists in the international scientific community, by establishing a network of researchers and institutions, thereby multiplying their impact

Vision

To promote gender equality for better science in the area of computational biology by boosting women representation in scientific and technological leadership, and ultimately building a more collaborative, supportive, equal and excellent scientific community.

Mission

To highlight the work from women computational biologists by providing role models, training, and support to women researchers in all career stages to develop their scientific career, with a special focus on their transition from postdoctoral to junior independent positions.
